Flight 966

Wednesday I flew United Airlines flight 966 from Los Angeles to Washington DC and the guy next to me wouldn’t stop talking.  I don’t mind a conversation here and there but it was 6:00am and I was up much earlier than that just to catch this flight.  Furthermore, I had Oprah’s book pick, The Story of Edgar Sawtell, and I was ready to settle in for some reading time.

I started to feel the frustration of trying to non-verbally give the guy next to me the hint that I had a big thick book waiting to be enjoyed.  My irritation grew so much so that my jaw started to tighten and my back teeth started to hurt.  I actually wondered if I would need a dentist Washington DC probably has plenty, but I only planned to be in town for three days.

I wouldn’t have minded a nice Washington DC sedation dentist on the airplane to either put me or Mr. Chatter box to sleep for the duration of the flight.  Since the flight plan only offered beverages and a bag of pretzels no Washington DC dental services were available mid-air.  I finally tried “pause-answer” as my strategic non-talking tactic.  Pause-answer is what you do when you are asked a question and you act like you are deep in reading so when asked a question you pause for an uncomfortable amount of seconds before you answer with, “what, I’m sorry, did you ask something.”  I tried it enough times and he finally got the hint!
