Tips on How to Coach Adults

As you can imagine, teaching adult leagues can be much different than coaching young children. Learning how to coach adults can be an intimidating, but gratifying experience, especially when you incorporate the following helpful tips.

Be Well Organized. As a team captain, you will be wearing many hats. You are the organizer, the scheduler, the teacher, and the manager. You have to be well organized to lead a team because adults respect those who have their acts together. League software will help you better organize your team’s schedule, payments, roster and just about everything else.

Take Advice from Other Coaches. There is always someone else out there who has been coaching longer than you. Always welcome the advice of veterans. You may learn something about the game you didn’t already know.

Treat Your Members as Equals. Even though you are the leader, never talk down to your team members. They are there to have fun, not be ordered around. Treat them like you would want to be treated.

And most importantly, have fun! Whether it’s softball, kickball or flag football, you are the coach because you love the sport! Remember winning is great, but having fun is the central element!
