My daughter loves sunbathing.  She can lay out in the sun for hours and hours.  While I’m not crazy about the amount of time she spends in the sun, at least when she’s in the backyard by the pool, I know where she is!  But when I discovered she was using no sunscreen or tanning lotions, I was not happy at all.  So we sat down and had a little talk.

Basically I explained to her that if she was going to spend that much time out in the sun, she had to try to protect her skin.  Her skin may be moist at supple at 16, but if she kept going the way she was going, she’d be all wrinkly and leathery by 40.  There was also the fact of skin cancer and the harms of UV rays.  Of course, she complained that if she used a sunscreen she wouldn’t get a tan.  What she didn’t realize is that the best suntan lotion to use has some UV protection in it, and can be used with a sunscreen. 

She was still a bit grumpy about it, saying that she wanted to get a really, really dark tan. So I lent her my dark tanning lotion to use for a week.  Not only did she get a better tan, she loved the smell of it.  We went shopping and she bought her own bottle and I thanked my lucky stars that I had won that battle.
