Spouse Loss Resources
Posted by HomeBusy on 10/21/08 in Health
Losing a spouse at any age is devastating. Recently, after fifty four years of marriage, my grandfather died leaving my grandmother widowed. As constant companions, my grandparents hardly spent any time away from one another. The family soon realized my grandmother was going to need a part-time helper in order to remain in her home.
Searching out family caregiver resources the family contacted agencies that specialized in elderly assistance. As the baby boomer population ages, more employment opportunities in home care training are developing. Many families cannot afford the expenses attached with nursing home communities. Home caregivers offer a great alternative.
Homecare provider training is widely available by both traditional and internet classes. My grandmother’s helper is a local college student. She works about twenty to twenty five hours a week helping my grandmother with house cleaning, errands, shopping and Doctor appointments. The helper is invaluable to our family. One of her most important roles is providing some companionship to my grandmother while her family conducts the business of life. Knowing my grandmothers daily needs are taken care of, enables our family gatherings to be much more enjoyable and stress free. Hiring a caregiver helped my grandmother through her devastating grief.
