A lesson in biofeedback

Father son oceanWhen my brother told me that he was using biofeedback as a way to help him deal with his anxiety disorder, I had no idea what I should say. Not because I didn’t support him, but because I had no idea what biofeedback was!  I had never heard of it and didn’t know if it was something that would benefit him or not. After a bit of awkward silence on my part, I asked him if he could maybe enlighten me as to what it was.

He explained to me that with the use of biofeedback equipment his doctor is helping him to understand the triggers that indicate an anxiety attack.  And by knowing the signs, such as muscle tension and sweating, he can implement meditative techniques to help alleviate his stress and avoid an anxiety attack.  When I asked him if the process hurt, he laughed.  I took that as a no.  He told me that they put electronic sensors on different parts of his body and it hurts no more than a doctor listening to your heartbeat.

With the biofeedback training my brother is learning how to become a less stressed person, which is helping him in all areas of his life, from work to interpersonal relationships, which I think is great.
