Recycling Customers Records

As an owner of a small business, I am always looking for ways to make our business operations more environmentally friendly. We have done such things install energy-efficient lighting, shut off the computers every day, and install skylights to reduce our reliance on power.
One area that we have not focused on heavily is recycling our paper waste. Our reasoning behind this is that the majority of the paper that we dispose of is company paperwork including private customer data. In most cases, this information could be used in an attempt to steal someone’s identity and therefore we have not recycled it up to this point.
But we knew that there would be some way that we could be able to recycle a paper while protecting the personal information of our clients. I decided that some research would be in order to ensure that our interests and our clients were protected.
I found a publication written by the Federal Trade Commission regarding protecting personal information for business. Inside the guide I found the best practices regarding planning for and preventing security breaches when it comes to information controlled by your business. Some suggestions included planning ahead to respond to security breaches as well as using a paper shredder to destroy sensitive information properly.
Armed with this information, I went online to find higher caliber commercial paper shredders for the business. I wasn’t looking for a cheap shredder, but I wanted to get a high security shredder to make sure that we would be able to recycle the remains without someone having the opportunity to reassemble the pieces and have that information in their hands.
I have placed an order and it should be delivered within the next week or so. I suppose I’ll have to organize a training session for the employees to educate them on the use of these new shredders as well as educate them on our new information handling procedures.
