Recognizing Innovation

Even if you didn’t set out to start a home business, don’t ignore a good idea when it comes a-knocking.
For instance, say you have an idea for an innovative new kind of flow meter, perhaps an ultrasonic flow meter. Rather than letting your idea be wasted, why not at the very least try to make something of it?
Some of today’s most powerful companies started out as home business or even a hobby. For instance, Yahoo! started out as the project of two college students. It was literally a personal hobby for them, a directory of their own interests online. However, as other people discovered the directory and began using it, Yahoo! emerged as a leader in Internet browsers.
Another oft-told example is that of Amazon.com, the popular online retailer. The founder, Jeff Bezos, started the business in 1995 as a small online bookstore, and eventually expanded into the ecommerce giant it is today. Basically, Bezos took a gamble that online would grow in popularity — which, obviously, it has, as you can buy practically anything online, including groceries from Bezos’s brainchild.
Of course, for every small business idea that exceeds everyone’s wildest dreams, there are some that only do moderately well — and tons of others that completely flop. But if you don’t try out your idea, you’ll never know whether it would have been the next Yahoo! or Amazon.com success story.
