A Bird’s Eye View: Using Birds for Aerial Photography

Did you know that during World War I, pigeons were one of America’s greatest allies? It may sound strange, but it’s true! By 1903, carrier pigeons were used as a fast, reliable way to send messages between troops and allied forces. Around their chests, these captivating little birds carried capsules containing messages and sensitive information.

Unlike slow-moving, noticeable balloons and kites, pigeons were quick and difficult to detect and shoot down. So, appreciating there mobile capabilities and amazing natural homing instincts, the military realized that pigeons could be used for photo reconnaissance, as well. Aerial mapping and photography using pigeons was very possible.

Equipped with small, light-weight cameras with timers set to take photographs in 30-second intervals, the pigeons were flown across enemy lines. Once above these locations, useful aerial photography opportunities were plenty.

Even today, some claim that pigeons are still used in remote parts of Britain and France to carry blood samples from one local to another. How cool is that?
